Upapada is the Arudha of the 12th house. An entire chapter is devoted in Jaimini's Upadesa Sutras to Upapada. Take the 12th lord from the Ascendant and see how far he is removed from the 12th house. Count the same number of signs from the 12th lord and the resulting sign is the Upapada. The exceptions applicable to Arudha also hold good here. That is, if the lord of any house is in the 4th or the 10th from it, then the 4th sign itself is the Arudha. Similarly benefics influencing the Upapada bring early marriage, while malefics like Saturn or Rahu tend to delay the event.
If the 2nd from the Upapada has malefic aspects or conjunctions, the native has a short married life or renounces the world. Why? Because:
-3rd house is Duschikya Sthan (दुश्चिक्य स्थान) in the chart of Kaal Purusha! Duschikya Sthana promotes anger, aggression, and forcefulness in the character of a native.
-6th house is for overcoming the obstacle, defeating the enemy, and be at the zenith of executing acute/pensive acts.
Consequently, when such natural malefic planets (because of their intrinsic harsh nature) are placed in these two houses from Arudha Lagna: 3rd house and the 6th house they promote harsh treatment and ruthlessness.
Hence, the native does the karmas to help promote, maintain, and defend his own material status (Arudha Lagna) aggressively and forcefully.

Case 2: Placement of Saturn in 2nd house from Arudha LagnaSaturn in 2nd H from Arudha Lagna (AL) will always impoverish the image and material status of a native. Saturn is the Naisargik karaka (natural significator) of poor, scarcity, abandoned, and unfortunate hence his such placement where he has to provide food and shelter (2nd house) is undesirable for high status. 2nd house is very important for sustenance and lasting effects for any Arudha pada. Case 3: Placement of Rahu in 3rd house from Arudha LagnaWhen Rahu is placed in 3rd house from Arudha Lagna the person will mislead/cheat/deceive or will be manipulative and cannot be truthful in all his/her dealings; unfortunately!
Rest all we can judge from the influence of Grahas and Rashis on Lagna. More the influence of Satwa guna planets (Sun, Moon and Jupiter) on Lagna the better. Even the influence of Rajo guna planets like (Mercury and Venus) is fine.
When we are considering the Drishti or aspects of planets on the Lagna, we should only see Graha Drishti in this regard.
Case 4: Placement of Lagna Lord in the 11th house from Arudha LagnaNormally, the placement of Lagna Lord in 3rd house is very good for material prosperity. As it makes the Arudha Lagna in the 5th house.
So from Arudha Lagna, the Lagna Lord is placed in the 11th house of actual gains. Native's own intelligence, Paka Lagna can now have a governing say on the acquisition of wealth, being placed there and hence influencing it directly.
It means native's own intelligence makes him accept or renounce material gains.

Positive influence (please refer to Jaimini Sutras for financial relationships between Grahas promoting financial growth or demoting it ) makes native accept happily and negative makes him deny/renounce wealth or wealth is not proposed to him, via this placement (again negative).

For example, if the Lagna Lord is in the fifth house, then count five signs from the Lagna lord to arrive at the ninth house. This ninth house becomes the Arudha Pada for the Lagna. Exception: The Arudha Pada cannot be in the same sign or the seventh from it. In case this happens, then choose the tenth house therefrom. For example, if the Lagna. In order to find my Arudha Lagna I then count 11 places from my chart ruler, so 11 places from Mercury, which would land me in the sign of Aquarius on the 9th house cusp. My Arudha Lagna is Aquarius, meaning that although in my birth chart I am a Gemini Rising, to other people I appear as a Aquarius rising.
Chart 4: Male: Born April 27, 1974 at noon at 12 N 25, 75 E 44.
Chart 4 of a temple priest has the Upapada in the 8th with 2 benefics Jupiter and Venus aspected by Mercury and the Sun. Its lord Saturn is in the 12th with Mars and the Moon. The native is still not married at 37 years. However, two benefics in the Upapada and the 2nd lord from the Upapada Jupiter is in his own sign in Navamsa which does not rule out marriage. It is the afflicted lord of Upapada in the 12th house from the Ascendant that is delaying the event.
* Aquarius comes under the lordship of both Saturn and Rahu.
In Chart 5 of a bank manager, the Upapada is in Aries with the Moon and aspected by Jupiter and Saturn. Its lord Mars is afflicted in the 7th. He had difficulty in getting a suitable alliance for marriage, but finally got married in his 30th year. The 7th house and its lord Mercury are heavily afflicted, so also the Upapada lord Mars which have given neurological disease to his wife since about 3 years.
Chart 5: Male: Born March 22, 1950 at 6h. 37m. at 12 N 52, 74 E 50
Chart 6: Male: Born May 22, 1970 at 16h. 04m. at 16 N 77 E 22.
The native of Chart 6 got married in May 1997. He divorced his wife in 2000. The Upapada is in Scorpio with a debilitated Moon aspected by debilitated Saturn and Mercury. It's lord Mars is in the Ascendant with Digbala which should have saved the marriage. Unfortunately Jupiter being retrograde and aspected by the Sun, Mars, Ketu and Rahu, all malefics could not help.
The native of Chart 7 got married in 1988 and the marriage lasted till 1996 when he divorced his wife and got remarried in the same year. Upapada is in Sagittarius aspected by Jupiter, Venus and Mars. Its lord though aspecting the Upapada is retrograde and aspected by malefic Mars, the 8th lord from the Ascendant, and debilitated Venus. The 2nd from Upapada has Rahu aspected by Mercury and exalted Moon. So the marriage did last for 8 years. For remarriage, the 2nd lord from the Ascendant and the 8th lord from the Upapada should be strong. Here Venus is the 2nd lord who though debilitated gets Neechabhanga. The 8th lord from the Upapada is the Moon who is exalted in the 9th from the Ascendant. This helped him to get remarried.
Chart 7 Male: Born October 26, 1953 at 4h. 04m. at 12 N 52, 74 E 50
Chart 8: Female: Born November 20, 1954 at OOh 04m. at 13 N 38, 74 E 42.
This lady's (Chart 8) marriage was in trouble right from the beginning. It continued for about 4 to 5 years till she gave birth to a female child. The in-laws then sent her away to her parents' house making various complaints against her. The Upapada in the 8th house gave initial hurdles in finding a match. Its lord Saturn is exalted in the 4th but debilitated in Navamsa. The Upapada aspected by 4 planets gave her a spouse well-placed in society. The 2nd lord from Upapada is Jupiter who is exalted in the Ascendant and is weak due to retrogression and due to Mars and Saturn being in a Kendra from him. The marriage did not work and she has been living away from her spouse for about 15 years.
The Upapada is also of help in matching horoscopes for marriage. It is better the spouse's Ascendant is in a trine from the Upapada of the other or in the 7th from it Such marriages have lasted long. Even if the Ascendant of the spouse is in a trine to the lord of the Upapada of the other or the Ascendant is owned by a planet who powerfully aspects the Upapada of the other, then also it is good.
Finally let us look at the chart of Sri Chandrasekhara Saraswati who was the Jagadguru of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.
Chart 9: Male: Born May 20, 1894 at 13h. 25m. at 11 N 57, 79 E 32.
The Upapada in Chart 9 is in Pisces in the 8th from the Ascendant with exalted Venus and Rahu. It is aspected by Ketu and Saturn(R). The Upapada lord Jupiter is in the 10th with the Sun and Mercury. The 2nd lord from Upapada is Mars who is in the 7th from the Ascendant in a Marana Karaka state. Because the Upapada is aspected by malefics Saturn, Ketu and Rahu, he renounced the material world.
Arudha Lagna In 9th House ScorpioThe Upapada is also of help in matching horoscopes for marriage. In Chart 2, the Upapada is in Gemini. The husband's Ascendant is Aquarius in trine to it.
In Chart 1, the Upapada is in Sagittarius and his first wife's Ascendant is in Gemini. The second wife's Ascendant is Taurus in trine to Mercury, the 2nd lord, and aspects the Moon, the lord of the 2nd from Upapada (8th from Sagittarius)
Usually marriage occurs when transit Jupiter aspects or occupies the 2nd from the Upapada. Such marriages are stable. In Chart 1, the first marriage took place when transit Jupiter was in Aquarius in the 3rd from Upapada. It lasted for 3-1/2 years but when the 2nd marriage occurred, Jupiter was in Leo aspecting Capricorn, the 2nd from Upapada. This marriage is now in its 19th year.
To summarise,
i) Upapada is an important factor for analyzing matters relating to marriage, its duration and the type of spouse one is likely to get.
ii) Benefics Jupiter, Venus and the Moon tend to give a beautiful spouse and generally, a good marriage.
iii) Malefics Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu aspecting or in the Upapada tend to delay the marriage; marriage is usually a dull affair.
iv) The 2nd lord from Upapada should be strong to sustain the marriage. Benefics or the Upapada lord aspecting the 2nd give a long married life. Malefics and bitter enemy of the lord of Upapada curtail the length of married life. Even benefics influencing the 2nd should be strong in both Rasi and Navamsa.
Arudha Lagna In 9th House Youtubev) If Upapada and its 2nd house are weak, the native may not marry at all or may renounce the world.
vi) Upapada should be considered also while matching charts for marriage. •

Lagna represents rising (उदय), beginning, Sunrise and birth. Arudha means mounted one, visible. Arudha Lagna means the rising that is mounted or visible or known to others. Arudha Lagna represents our status & worldly image in society. It is created by our own intelligence (Lagna Lord only), knowingly or unknowingly. It keeps transforming and changing with time, depending upon the influence on this Lagna (AL) and its lord. Planets placed in AL, lord of AL, and Grahas having Rashi Drishti/Graha Drishti on AL influence and shape it with time.
Just as there is Arudha of Ascendant, in the same way, there is Arudha of houses called Bhav Padas. Their calculation is similar to that of AL but we use lord of the house to do so for each house.
The following are some scenarios to understand the concept and then read Vedic charts.
Case 1: Let us see how planets placed in the 3rd house and 6th house from Arudha Lagna govern our material or spiritual pursuits.Natural malefic planets or Kroor Grahas (Rahu, Saturn, Ketu, Mars even Sun) are said to be well placed in the 3rd house and in the 6th house from Arudha Lagna (AL). Why? Because:
-3rd house is Duschikya Sthan (दुश्चिक्य स्थान) in the chart of Kaal Purusha! Duschikya Sthana promotes anger, aggression, and forcefulness in the character of a native.
-6th house is for overcoming the obstacle, defeating the enemy, and be at the zenith of executing acute/pensive acts.
Consequently, when such natural malefic planets (because of their intrinsic harsh nature) are placed in these two houses from Arudha Lagna: 3rd house and the 6th house they promote harsh treatment and ruthlessness.
Hence, the native does the karmas to help promote, maintain, and defend his own material status (Arudha Lagna) aggressively and forcefully.
This is very good for most material pursuits and for professions, where one needs to prove his/her might or superiority over rivals or to be called a winner etc. By being an active attacker improves one image ( Arudha Lagna) and scope of influence on others in the material world.
But real Saints are totally different from these worldly achievers, they never impose, nor do they retaliate or do any aggression. Surely, they have somya Grahas or natural benefices like Jupiter, Venus, un inflicted Mercury and Moon in paksha bala or having digital strength in 3rd house and 6th house from their Arudha Lagna ( AL) or they have no planets there at all.

From Arudha Lagna:-3rd house from Arudha Lagna (AL) has satwo guna & natural benefic planet, Jupiter
-3rd lord from AL is a natural benefic planet, Venus.
-6th house has Mercury & Venus and Ketu is aspecting it by Rashi Drishti. The sign is owned by Saturn in strength.
-2 somya grahas & then 2 kroor grahas are there to handle enmity, competition or blockage in his material pursuits.
From Lagna:-3rd lord, Saturn is strong. He is placed in a friendly sign, further involved in parivartana yoga with Mercury. Saturn is one of the karaka of the 10th house.
-Karaka for bravery, Mars is strong and well placed in his own sign, Aries.
Further lord of the Ascendant, Jupiter is well placed in 11th H in Yoga with Mars ( planets are placed in 1/7 house from each other).
-Jupiter is Karaka of 11th H. Strong Sun as 9th lord & AK in LA.
-Brave personality: 3rd house, 3rd lord, karaka of bravery Mars and Lagna all are strong.
-Conclusion: we can say that this native has no upfront tamas, does not like to hurt anyone, and does not do aggression, in spite of being brave.
Case 2: Placement of Saturn in 2nd house from Arudha LagnaSaturn in 2nd H from Arudha Lagna (AL) will always impoverish the image and material status of a native. Saturn is the Naisargik karaka (natural significator) of poor, scarcity, abandoned, and unfortunate hence his such placement where he has to provide food and shelter (2nd house) is undesirable for high status. 2nd house is very important for sustenance and lasting effects for any Arudha pada. Swami ji was a monk, a renunciate with no attachment to wealth.
However, if that Saturn is exalted, in its own sign or in Multrikona sign then the impoverishment is considerably low.
If Saturn is so placed in the 2nd house from Arudha Lagna ( AL) and native wears a blue sapphire (नीलम) then surely he will start behaving as if he has a lessor or scarce resource at his disposition so does his material status will sink. This will hold good for Rashi Chart.
In some other context, say in Siddhamsha (D24) chart (used to see Siddhis or knowledge of a native) placement of Shani in the 2nd House from Arudha Lagna can indicate someone who sometimes does blunders or mistakes and shows lack of knowledge in some areas hence can degrade honor in the field of academics. Cause, Arudha Lagna, or the manifested social image, is sustained in a very poor way, there is inadequate feeding to sustain it in a healthy manner.
Likewise, the meaning and context of the proper divisional charts should be understood and relevant information should be drawn for clear and crisp readings.
Case 3: Placement of Rahu in 3rd house from Arudha LagnaWhen Rahu is placed in 3rd house from Arudha Lagna the person will mislead/cheat/deceive or will be manipulative and cannot be truthful in all his/her dealings; unfortunately!
Rest all we can judge from the influence of Grahas and Rashis on Lagna. More the influence of Satwa guna planets (Sun, Moon and Jupiter) on Lagna the better. Even the influence of Rajo guna planets like (Mercury and Venus) is fine.
When we are considering the Drishti or aspects of planets on the Lagna, we should only see Graha Drishti in this regard.
Case 4: Placement of Lagna Lord in the 11th house from Arudha LagnaNormally, the placement of Lagna Lord in 3rd house is very good for material prosperity. As it makes the Arudha Lagna in the 5th house.
So from Arudha Lagna, the Lagna Lord is placed in the 11th house of actual gains. Native's own intelligence, Paka Lagna can now have a governing say on the acquisition of wealth, being placed there and hence influencing it directly.
It means native's own intelligence makes him accept or renounce material gains.
Positive influence (please refer to Jaimini Sutras for financial relationships between Grahas promoting financial growth or demoting it ) makes native accept happily and negative makes him deny/renounce wealth or wealth is not proposed to him, via this placement (again negative).
The most troubling situation is that of Devguru Brihaspati, Jupiter! Because it is the Marana Karaka Sthana (MKS) for him. Eg: Lagna being Sagittarius or Pisces and Jupiter is placed in the 3rd house.
Case 5: Shatru Pada (A6), when placed in 12th house from Arudha LagnaBhav Pada of the 6th house of enemies & obstruction is called Shatru Pada or A6 in some Jyotish software.
One of the best placement of Shatru Pada (A6) is in the 12th house from Arudha Lagna (AL).
Shatru Pada (A6) represents: the tangible and real physical enemies (people) or competitors (people) of a native and 12th is the house of ignoring or giving up and loss.
So in such placement, the native constantly ignores his enemies (A6) in the practical world and focuses on his work only: very good for success in the long run.
On the contrary side, the enemies/ competitors of the person make sure that the person is well remembered in the world because of their actions in this context. Consequently, the image of the native gets the visibility and attention of the people.
For enemies/competitors (Shatru pada, A6), the Arudha Lagna of the native is in 2nd house and 2nd house is very important for the sustenance of any Arudha Pada. So in order to help sustain themselves, the enemies or competitors will do so for the native.
Case 6: How do we judge the manifestation of any Bhav PadaPlanets placed in any Bhav Pada tell us about the manifested qualities of that person in the life of a native.
For example, if one has Ketu in Upa Pada ( Bhav Pada of the 12th house, depicted as UL), the representation of one's spouse and the person with whom one share his/her life and all resources etc: can be very spiritual and/or quite headless with sudden developments taking place all the times in the life of the spouse. Likewise, we can judge the same for any other Bhav Pada.
Case 7: The houses from Lagna show where Bhav Pada(s) will manifest in life and/or circumstances in which they happen in our existence.For example:
Daar or Kalatra Pada (A7) placed in the 5th house from Lagna can mean that native finds love/business partners in followers, students, or people having such engagements in the beginning.
Putra Pada (A5) placed in the 7th house can also mean that a native has a romantic relationship with someone from his following/students or native can have business partnerships with such people.
If both the above-stated placements are present in a chart then surely these readings are possible with great probability.
-5th is the house of following, children and students.
-7th is the house of relationships, desires, and business
-Putra Pada is the manifestation of the 5th house (or Pada of the 5th house represented by A5 in Jyotish software). Putra means children & Pada means manifestation. Hence, the Pada of Lagna called Arudha Lagna is also termed as Lagna Pada.
